How to Make Your Own Costume 1

This video and this brief series are just to start giving you ideas on how you can make your own costume for a party or even Halloween.  The young lady in the video throws out a few good ideas on how easy it is to constuct a simple costume for very little money.  I thought she explained it well when she suggested buying an outfit for dual purposes…one to wear at a normal function and then how to convert it to be used as a costume.  For more on masquerade and Halloween costumes, CLICK HERE

Another Perspective From Another Theatrical Costumer

This costumer reminded me of the enormous amount of fabric it takes to make some costumes; and how many sources of fabric stores and mills that we used to create and build.  

Our strong suit was that our firm had many, many authentic costumes from several previous eras going back as far as the 1860’s.  The problem was that the clothing of those earlier generations would not necessarily fit the men and women of the 2000’s.

Stage / Theatrical Costuming

Ah!  This is throwback to some of my costuming background. Although I wasn’t involved in the theatrical aspects of costumeing that much, I was reminded that it takes a lot of thought to prepare for a stage production.  One can’t just throw a ‘blue shirt’ on someone and hope that tells the story of a character.

Werewolf Facial Hair and Crepe Hair

If you saw our most recent post, we spoke of what you can do with crepe hair; and here is another use for the product.  Hmm…a werewolf for Halloween.  The part that discusses the facial hair and crepe hair comes about 8 minutes or so into the video so you might need to wade through the first several minutes.  For more on costumes, stage makeup and other things related, visit us HERE

Fake Beards with Crepe Hair

Crepe hair?  Not easy to find.  Most all-season costume shops carry it, but rarely will you find it at one of thos seasonal Halloween shops. This video condenses the process into a few minutes, but you can see what you can achieve for a theatrical production or a Halloween party.  

In addition to soaking crepe hair and stretching it;  you can also stretch and steam iron it to get the same effect.  I can also be pulled apart without the straightening process if you want kinkier hair For more, visit us HERE

Making a Nose with Nose Putty

Nose Putty.The old standard in theater. It used to be relatiely soft.. ala the brand she is using; then later the manufactures hardened it and it needed to be kneaded to soften it a bit. Apparently some brands have softened it again. Careful about the softening though as it only continues to soften and never harden back up again. A caveat: She wore a couple of rings while she was doing this video, and if that putty get lodged into a setting on a ring, it might be quite difficult to remove. Oh yes, on the removal of the putty. It’s a sloppy job and might take a few minutes longer to get it off than it took to put it on. For more on stage makeup and costumes, CLICK HERE

Do It Yourself Bald Wig

After the previous video, I found this video in which a lady did the same process by herself. This means you don’t necessarily need a professional makeup artist to do the job for you, and that might be important if you are just going to a Halloween party and don’t want to spend the $$$.

How to Apply a Bald Wig

Kojack? Yul Brynner? Both known for their bald pates, eh? Yet that lack of hair was natural. How do they make someone with a mane of hair become bald without shaving off the hair? Here is a great video of the step-by-step process as to how it is achieved.

This process is also the beginning step in creating a receding hair line and other odd hair styles. Make them bald first, then add the hair pieces to achieve the final look. For more on costumes and stage makeup, visit us HERE

Werewolf Makeup – How to

No, it isn’t Halloween yet, but since we’ve been on the ‘makeup’ topic, this might be a good place to plug this in. In this first group of videos (of 2 groups), we, or rather he, demonstrates what makeup and clothing might be needed to transform you to a ‘real’ Wolfman. The makeup, of course, is critical to the transformation, however oft times the accessories are equally important as well.

Is this makeup great? No, but with the addition of a product called crepe hair, and a bottle of spirit gum or liquid latex, this would be greatly enhanced. Maybe more on crepe hair at the end of this series, or maybe sometime in the future. I love the stuff, and most Halloween seasonal shops have no idea what it is; or if they do, they don’t know how to properly use it. It’s available through most all-year-round costume shops. And you’ll probably get a crash course in how to use it as well, if you ask nicely.
