Costumes! Where to start? Start here!

Costumes!  Where to start?  Start here!

Guest Author: Paul Writer

People love costumes, love to dress up and become someone else for a short time.  How do you go about picking costumes?  Also, do you buy costumes or just rent them?  You will find the answers to these questions right here.

There are essentially 3 different routes you can follow when you need costumes.  There’s D.I.Y, buying and renting options.  Picking the best one for you will depend heavily on your budget, creativity and possible sewing machine prowess.  With hiring, you may only have a limited stock to choose from and they may not be particularly original.  Added to that, if you go for hired, you need to return the costume in the same condition as it started.

Another dimension to the buy, sell, or do it yourself is the addition of children.  If the reason for buying costumes is it’s a kids fancy dress party for children.  If are not very good with a needle and a thread or with a sewing machine, the one of the other 2 options are still open.

With children’s costumes, you are probably best going ahead and finding one to buy.  Because if you chose rented, you will have to return it, and, children are less likely to keep their costumes dirt and stain free.  If you are good with needles, you may consider to do it yourself, this would be a fun and educational way for the children to learn some homely skills.

Due to the increase of online websites, many people buy online, or visit a store that has a website, to buy their costumes.  It may mean that you spend a lot of money on something you only wear once.  The positives are that you don’t have to worry about returning it, you may have a wider range of choice and therefore a choice from more creative and original costumes.

Choosing the right costume for you depends on the occasion.  If there is a particular theme to the party to the party you are going to, then you would want to come over as a good sport.  If it’s a western theme for example, you wouldn’t dress as an alien or space ranger.  At the same time, it can be a challenge if it’s just a fancy dress party with no theme.  Remember to kit your costumes out with helpful accessories, such as masks, hats and cutlasses!!

Don’t limit yourself, it has to be a costume in which you feel comfortable.  If you are intending on dancing, then it would be appropriate that there was ways to deal with extras and wings and stuff.  Overall, don’t sweat the decision.  It’s good that you are choosing from costumes for the party.  Some people go shy, and don’t want to do those things.  At least you are having a go!

So yes, there are things to take into consideration when looking for costumes.  Once you have decided whether to buy, rent or make.  The next step is to accessories and then, all that is left for you to do is – have fun in your wondrous choice of costumes!

Great Ideas For Your Halloween Costume

How to Get Great Ideas For Your Halloween Costume

You’ve been invited to a Halloween party?  Do you need a Halloween costume? Dilemma, dilemma.   Where do you begin and where do you look for ideas? It might depend on your personality and your interests.

As a starting point, do you want to be you or do you want to be someone, something else?

Perhaps you are an Type A personality or are you a Type B personality?  With a change of costume, a mask, a dab of makeup; you can be you, or you can be your alter ego.

If you are outgoing and bubbly, you might consider something that will make you the life of the party  (which you probably already are).  A little cleavage, a rose between your teeth and you might be a spicy Salsa dancer or a Saloon girl.

Quiet, shy, reticent?

Sister Rose Marie with rosary and prayer book in hand, and in her colorful combination of white and black would be a quite chic costume.  Marian the Librarian (remember ‘Music Man’?) with her long black skirt and high necked, long sleeved blouse?  Don’t forget  Puritanical  Hester Pritt (‘Scarlet Letter’), although her character was suspect by some.

Or be the opposite of your personality type.  Simply reverse the types of costumes and characters as previously discussed.

Couples costumes are always fun, too. Pairing with your significant other, you might go to your Halloween costume party as in a pair of jailbirds; or Rag Dolls like ‘Raggedy Ann and Andy’.  Or opposites as in Satan and a beautiful Angel?  Laurel and Hardy make a great comedic team.

Raggedy Ann Deluxe Adult Costume

Costume available at Buycostumes.com.  See ad in right column.

Where to start getting Halloween costume ideas?

You might start with the front page of your local newspaper, and the rest of the newspaper as well.  Sometimes the newspaper will spark an idea, and some of the best costume ideas originate with your own creativity.

Today’s front page renders little, other than political issues.  On the political front (as it relates to Halloween), there is an Obama mask on the market as well as most of the past presidents going as far back as the ever Richard Nixon mask. More recently there are the First Lady masks to compliment the presidents.

In the business section is a story about the growing need for blue collar workers.  This might open the possibility of occupational and career costumes such as policemen, firemen, doctors, nurses, construction workers, soldiers and sailors.

Of course, the economy is always in the business news.  If you can fashion a rain barrel out of cardboard, you have a perfect  costume for someone who is ‘broke’.

Harry the Hobo Clown Adult Costume

Costume available at Buycostumes.com.  See ad in right column.

The Arts and Entertainment section is replete with stories and photos of actors and actresses.  Do you want to spoof Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan?  Willie Nelson or Nelson Mandela?  Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt or perhaps a role they played? Greta Garbo?  Pretty far back in movie history, but a trip to a thrift shop might help you find a dress that might be ‘fashioned’ to fit ‘Garbo’ ; or maybe Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz

And of course, the comic strips.  Do you want to be Blondie, the cartoon character?  Do you want to be Blondie, the singer?  Perhaps a soldier like Beetle Bailey or a Viking like Hagar the Horrible?

And what’s in the next section of the paper?

Our third section is the Sports pages and the classifieds.  Frankly, because of the proliferation of athletic shirts and caps, it should be easy to become your favorite player.  But is a costume a costume if it is everyday wear?

Hmmm… Nope.  Can’t find anything in today’s paper that seems to be a good Halloween costume idea.  As for me, I’ll wait and see what tomorrows news will bring.

Ideas! Ideas! Ideas! The Lazy Way to Halloween Costume Ideas!

Ideas!  Ideas!  Ideas!  The Lazy Way to Halloween Costume Ideas!

Here it is, only a few weeks from my Halloween costume party, and I don’t have an idea of what I am going to wear.

Flapper Adult Costume

Costume pictured above is available at Buy Costumes.com.  Just click on the ad in the right column and type in “flapper’.

Should I get out that Flapper dress that I bought last year?  I felt rather vampish last year. Or do I want something different.  I feel silly and goofy this year.  Maybe a Harlequeen (Harlequin) costume?

If I look to current events for a costume, I might want to delay my choice until later, because todays’ current events may not be current in a month or so.

Should I rent or buy?

There is a National Costumers Association (aka: NCA) member store near you if you live in a relatively large city.  The NCA members are in the costume business all year round; unlike the seasonal shops who open up a storefront for a few weeks, then POOF!….Gone!   NCA members not only sell costumes, they also have rental departments.  When you rent,

you get much better choice, better quality, better service and the rental fees are generally not outrageous.
If you want to view their member list by state, click this link for the National Costumers Association.  BTW, this site (the one you are looking at) and it’s management are not NCA members.

Soon, we’ll begin to dwell on Halloween costume ideas.

July 4 and Halloween Costumes?

Jun
Comments Off on July 4 and Halloween Costumes?   Posted by admin |  Category:Miscellaneous

July 4 and a hint of Halloween yet to come.  It’s nearing the Fourth of July, replete with the parades and BBQ’s and other festivities, BUT Halloween and the need to consider your Halloween costume is closing in on you.

Most costume shops have an array of Independence Day costumes such as Uncle Sam costumes, the Spirit of 76 costumes (you know, the one where there is an old man and a young lad playing drums on either side of the gentleman playing a fife?  Oh, the flagbearer is actually hidden behind the drummers and fifer, in case you wondered).

These costumes can be used for Halloween as well if you opt to do a patriotic themed Halloween costume party; but sexy or scary seems to be more in vogue for Halloween.

Want to start early?  Just look at the Catagories in the right column and check out out Halloween suggestion from this past year.  The further you go back in this catagory, the more suggestions you will get.

SURVEY – Ladies Period Apparel

Ladies Period Costumes and Apparel – SURVEY

Is there any interest in having a woman’s costume made that would replicate a period in history?  Just a survey.

Our business (and this site) is devoted to providing information as it relates to costuming, after having had a brick and mortar business for 129 years.  Yet…

At one time we produced women’s dresses and men’s pants and shirts from the 1840’s for our state’s historical society.

Though almost retired, I’m still a costumer at heart and am interested in at least investigating the possibility of re-entering the business as a custom (not to be confused with costume) manufacturer of women’s period apparel.

But is there a need?  Is there an interest?

No commitment on your part, just trying to see if there is a market.  A simple Yes or No would be sufficient.  Just comment (Y or N) below.

Geezer Bandit Mask Revisited

Mar
Comments Off on Geezer Bandit Mask Revisited   Posted by admin |  Category:Miscellaneous

People really don’t look at each other, at least in casual situations like dealing with a cashier at Walmart,  or being robbed at a bank.  They look up or down or away from the one they are talking to and never ‘study’ their faces.  If they looked/stared as intently as a pair of lovers, they might actually see something.

I suspect, that if people would look reasonably closely at these faces / masks, they would detect them for what they are…masks.

With photos, videos, and on stage (lighting and distance), one can get away with more than looking someone eyeball to eyeball.  If someone is that close, it seems like it would be impossible not to know it is a mask.

I have to assume that the colorations and texture of the masks closely resembles human skin; but it’s not the look as much as it is the fit at certain points.  The eyes, lips, nostrils, ears.

I have to further assume that the masks are made so snugly as to allow the m muscle movement of the skin to cause movement of the mask.  And that they are long enough to cover at least a portion of one’s chest and back.

The main premise of all this is that a mask adds a layer of ‘skin’ to a human face.  The thickness of that layer will determine how easy it is to detect whether it is s mask or not.

The first thing I would look at would be the eyes.  To get a mask that would fit that closely around the eyes would probably be uncomfortable to wear, but the eye blending into the thin latex covering over the skin would be probably detectible.

An old mans ears continue to grow well into old age, and are larger than a younger persons on average.  If an old man were to wear a mask over his already enlarged ears, then the ear par of the mask would make them appear even larger.

Wearing glasses, the line of the glasses frames back to the ear should be nearly parallel to the floor, and not elevated up at an angle to the ear.  If the angle is upward, then probably the masks ears are larger to cover the wearers ears, thus causing the glass to be a bit atilt.

On the good quality masks, the mouth will move with the mouth of the wearer; BUT the mouth / lips of these better masks do not form words.  It might look a little like lip synching.  The wearers teeth will set back ever so slightly depending on the thickness, and some part of the skin might be noticeable and the corners of the mouth.

So is the Geezer wearing a mask?  In the pic, I see that the glasses frames seem to be aligned and that his ears don’t seem to be enlarged.  But because of not being able to see teeth at the forefront of his face, and that his expression in other photos seems to be similar, I would guess this to be a mask.  Hmmmm….wonder if the FBI would send me a couple of more detailed pics?  Preferably one where I could see if he had nasal hair. LOL

Geezer Bandit…Mask?

Mar
Comments Off on Geezer Bandit…Mask?   Posted by admin |  Category:Miscellaneous

Being nearly retired, I, when asked about living on a fixed income, kiddingly say that I have a gun and a ski mask in my car and make an occasional withdrawal from the local bank when I need a little extra cash.

But there is an old man known as the ‘Geezer Bandit’, who isn’t kidding as he robs bank after bank in California.  But is he really an old man, or a younger man wearing an elaborate mask?

In the main, the quality of rubber/latex masks found in Halloween shops has deteriorated over the years; but there are a couple of companies manufacturing high quality masks that are good enough to fool the general public.  And for several hundred dollars, they had better be better than good, they better be  great quality masks.

In the early and mid 1950’s Don Post Studios made the most realistic, albeit monster type, masks that I ever saw.  Movie quality to be sure.   I doubt that the scary Post ‘Phantom of the Opera’ or ‘Werewolf’ masks would have been so disarming.

On the realistic masks, the fit is tight enough so that the mask moves in conjunction with the muscles of the face and the mouth opens and closes when the person wearing the mask speaks.  How can you tell if it’s a face or a mask?

Come back in a few days and all will be revealed.
