A props artisan at the Alley Theatre named Haley Polak shared her work with us and was not only featured in a Rosco Spectrum blog post , but also in an email blast that we sent to our databases of theatre, display and event professionals. This not only gave recognition to Ms. Polak’s scenic accomplishments, it also gave her venue some excellent publicity.

About Stage Props

The Props Master should ask lots of questions of the Director about specifications for the props. A list of required props should be made available early on in the rehearsal process, preferably during the first two weeks of rehearsals. Please note, however, that a play is an ongoing creative process and the need for new props will be made up to and in some cases during Tech Week. Schedule a time early in the production cycle with the Director and Scenic Designer to review the prop list and discuss matters related the visual look of the show and their design concepts.

Personal props are props worn or carried by a particular actor and issued to him rather than stored on the prop table. For participating ACTF productions, the Props Designer will assist the Prop Shop Student Manager , and Staff Production Manager/Technical Director in storing props for possible travel to festival. Obtains and maintains any rehearsal props called for by the Director by the “Rehearsal Props Due” deadline on the Department Calendar Rehearsal props are substitutes of comparable size and weight used by actors until the final props are available. Once usage was established, we documented all of the pieces in a prop book which was given to the prop mistress.

Do Stage Makeup

Highlight the cheekbone (1A) and shadow the hollow beneath (2) to make “sunken” cheeks. The nasolabial folds, those creases running from either side of the nose down to the mouth, become very pronounced with age. Exaggerate them by placing a strong highlight on the upper lip leading into the crease. Leave a hard edge at the crease, but blend it into the foundation on the upper lip. Then apply a line of dark shadow along the crease, and with a clean brush pull the shadow slightly away from the crease into the cheek and blend with the foundation. Area E-The Mouth and Chin.

Start at your nostril, follow the large crease down (if it’s hard to find smile, then follow the crease) to your mouth. In the first picture I have a brown line crossed out. I didn’t like the way it looked so I just wiped it off and fixed it. No sweat. You can see it fixed in the second picture. Draw the line and have it keep going past the mouth. Your cheeks are going to hang real low as you get geriatric. Blend that line out, it’s a bit thicker than the rest of your wrinkle lines.

Zombies, and movies such as Warm Bodies indicate how popular zombies are. There’s something about the undead that excites us. Even though an apocalypse is probably nowhere close to occurring, thinking about our former friends and family members trying to eat our brains is chilling. Costume Malfunctions and Other Stuff

If something happens to your costume, tell the costume team immediately. Things happen. Zippers break, hems fall, buttons come off. Tell your costume team right away (ideally during intermission or right after the show) so they’re able to fix it in time for the next show. Don’t wait until the last minute to say something; you are not likely to get much sympathy five minutes before the curtain rises! As well, keep your costume pieces together and always make sure everything is accounted for before you leave each day, from your ballgown right down to your sparkly shoes.

Related to costume, makeup is the application of cosmetics to the face and body. A key function of makeup is to help the performer personify and embody the character he or she is playing. Makeup used to be more popular in the theater than it is today. In a modern small theater, performers playing realistic will simply go without makeup of any consequences. Use of makeup is often essential because the age of a character differs from that of the performer. Suppose that 20 years old performer is playing the part of a 60-year-old character. Through the use of makeup, the appropriate age can be suggested.

Theiss explored in her previous works the theme of flying employing in her designs butterflies motifs, but this time she had to apply her skills and knowledge to pieces that had to evoke concepts such as fear, hope and freedom rather than literally represent them. Turning to a dark palette comprising black, grey and dove with some plum added in, the designer employed a series of different techniques to help Donlon’s telling her story. Monster Makeup

This video again is a reminder of the genious of Lon Chaney.  It also mentions Dick Smith, who auhored a one time magazine named ‘Monster Makep’, as I recall, in the mid-1960’s.  My copy was destroyed in a fire in 1989 and have been looking for a copy (at a reasonble price) since then.  That magazine gave numerous tips on how an average person could do a credible werewolf or vampire and numerous others.

The products to work with and from are improved today, but the techniques are much the same.

Lon Chaney, The Man Behind the Makeup

I’ve always been fascinated by Lon Chaney, Sr. and his ability to create great movie ‘monsters’ without all the modern latex and other synthetic prosthetics.  This video speaks of Chaney’s skills and a little on how he achieved his results.  I especially liked the mockup of his own face.  

BTW, Chaney had a son, Lon Jr., who was a character actor in his own right.

In the 1950’s, Don Post Studios created the best rubber masks that I have ever seen, using what appeared to be Chaney’s version of some of his characters (Phantom, Hunchback).  Seems they cost a fortune for the times…maybe retailing around $50.

Man of 1000 Faces

Lon Chaney was a master of makeup in the silent and early movies.  In this video you’ll see a 3 minute crash course in what Lon Chaney did with real makeup.  I love prosthetics and the realistic results you get from them, but can you image this being done with nose putty and grease paint?  

Over the next few days, hopefully we can find a few videos on how to makeup some of those early movie characters.

Make It Yourself Costume Tips

This young lady explains everything you need to start sewing your own Halloween / theatrical costume.  There are numerous elements to preparing a do-it-yourself costume, but they are all pretty easy to do.

Sorry, she didn’t get into the sewing process itself, but that might have taken a few hours longer.  (:>)

Belly Dancing Costume Fabrics

Going shopping for fabric for your belly dancing costume?  This video is like a going to a fabric store to see all the options, or flipping through the pages of a fabric sample book.

You will notice that we will be focusing on fabrics for your Hallween costume or theatrical costumes or for any other specific costume needs for the next week or so.  This series, hopefully, will correspond with the addition of our new affiliate, Hancock Fabrics.  We will try and keep you informed with updates as to specials on fabrics, coupons, discounts, etc.

The only drawback to this series on fabrics is that you need to have at least some minimal sewing skills or the ability to drape fabrics to acheive whatever you want to achieve.  Me?  Can’t sew a stitch.
